Chapter 22

I find my hands are shaking.

I suspect they've been doing that since we signed off from our conversation with Gray and the Interpol agent, and I clench my hands into fists to hide the reaction. I can't believe I managed to keep my cool while talking to her. I'd been terrified that she'd recognize my voice, but despite my fears she hadn't realized who I am.

I feel like a total heel lying to her. What will she think when she finally finds out? My stomach clenches tight.

We'd parked the van a few hundred yards from the picnic spot, having chosen to be on-site for this first communication with the Interpol agent. And with Gray. The white telephone company logo on the side is cheesy but it gets the job done, providing sufficient cover should Roshkov’s men come up on us.

"So, the little girl just helped us solve our serial killer case," says Dharma, a grin on her heart-shaped face. She seems pretty pleased.

"It all makes perfect sense," I respond, silently relieved we no longer need to investigate the case.

She nods, her eyes slightly out of focus as she considers the case. "They arrive in LA and are then distributed to the rest of the country," she says, nodding. "We just need to find out how they are transported. That way we can take down the whole organization."

"I like the way you think, D," I respond, rubbing my chin as I lean back in the seat. We'd originally planned to raid the warehouse at the port when Roshkov takes possession of the shipment of girls, but now we have a way of taking down more, if not all, of the operation. "But, we have to be careful we don't blow the whole op by getting greedy."

She grunts in agreement, but my mind is already turning over the possibilities. Maybe I'm trying to keep busy doing something with my time that doesn't include moping around.

No matter how hard I try I can't get my mind off Gray.

What had it taken for her to make the decision to put herself in such danger, to create this master plan to betray such a very powerful man?

Nikolai Roshkov is not a man to mess with. And I don't see him as the type of man to go easy on Gray just because she is a woman. I'm afraid to even think about what consequences Gray had faced for leaving in the first place.

My stomach tightens painfully as I recall Emily's letter. And her description of her initiation into prostitution at the hands of Nikolai Roshkov himself. How many brothers could live through reading such a letter?

I'd vowed to bring him down, to end his empire, and to save my little sister. Now I have one more thing to do.

Save Gray.

I'd gone undercover to get to know Sara, to see if she could be our ticket to Roshkov. But instead I met Gray and found a girl running for her life. But, even while running she took the time to think about others.
